Prospective students

prospHigh school students new to Dalhousie are eligible for entrance scholarships.

Transfer or mature students will be considered for scholarships after completing one year of study at Dalhousie. Refer to the Current Students page for more information. Students applying to third year Engineering please see the Faculty of Engineering for scholarship information.

There are two main types of entrance scholarships:

The First Nations and Indigenous Black Students Scholarship is open to both new and transfer students.  Please refer to the General Entrance Award application for details.

Entrance Scholarship Consideration

Students are eligible for entrance scholarship consideration if they:
  • are applying for admission to Dalhousie direct from high school;
  • have a complete application for admission on file as of March 15th; and,
  • have a min. 85 percent admission average (min. 80 percent for students from high schools within Atlantic Canada), unless otherwise stated.

International applicants are considered for grades based entrance awards.

A complete application for admission includes:

  • an application for admission (including supplemental form, if applicable)
  • admissions application fee
  • official high school transcript (OUAC number for Ontario applicants)
  • list of second semester courses, if applicable
  • Test scores, if applicable; e.g. SAT, English language proficiency

GRADES BASED ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed for Dalhousie Entrance Renewable Scholarships based on Adjusted Average and submission of a written response. Students must have a min. 95% Adjusted Average to be considered. All other students will be assessed based on the following table.

Students with a 95%+ Admissions Average, who are applying for fall 2010, are invited to submit a written response to the following scholarship question:
Please discuss one of your extra-curricular activities (community services, sports, the arts, etc) and reflect on what you learned from your participation and how this learning may apply more broadly in your life or society.

Your response must be received by March 15th to be considered for our top Renewable Entrance Scholarships. Responses should be a maximum of 750 words and submitted by e-mail to awards@dal.ca in an attached Word or RTF (Rich Text Format) document.

Adjusted Average
An Adjusted Average is calculated based upon the level of difficulty of courses (IB and AP courses) and the total number of university preparatory classes beyond the required five. The Adjusted Average is created through a scale. Students can earn up to two additional points which are added to the admission average.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Scholarships

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Candidates are automatically assessed for entrance scholarships based on their predicted IB Diploma scores (if provided) which must be received by March 15.

IB Diploma students with a predicted IB score of 36 or more must also submit a written response to the Scholarship Question to be considered for the Dalhousie Entrance Renewable Scholarships. The question is as follows:
Please discuss one of your CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) activities and reflect on what you learned and how this learning may apply more broadly in your life or society.

Your response must be received by March 15th to be considered for our top Renewable Entrance Scholarships. Responses should be a maximum of 750 words and submitted by e-mail to awards@dal.ca in an attached Word or RTF (Rich Text Format) document.

AWARDS WHICH REQUIRE A SEPARATE APPLICATION

Scholarships listed in the table below require an application. In some cases, students can receive these scholarships in addition to the grades based scholarships. A minimum 80 per cent admissions average as of March 15 is required to be eligible for these scholarships. Most awards are assessed using the General Entrance Award Application below, including the First Nations and Indigenous Black Students Scholarship.

Do you live in the Shatford Trust area?  Students who have lived in the Shatford Trust area (Hubbards, NS) for at least three years may be eligible for the Shatford Memorial Trust Scholarship held by Dalhousie University. Click here for information.
